67 Official Homeschool Activities in Upstate SC: Exciting Sports, Arts, Music, STEM & Outdoor (2026)
One of the most common worries about homeschooling is that children will miss out on activities — sports, music, art, theater, STEM programs — that a traditional school provides. In the Upstate, that concern is almost completely unfounded.
Across Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee counties, there are over 67 verified homeschool activities spanning sports, gymnastics, dance, individual athletics, outdoor adventure, nine state parks, visual arts, ceramics, music, theater, performing arts, STEM, and museums. Several of these programs were built specifically for homeschoolers. Many more actively welcome them.
This is a detailed, verified 2026 homeschool activities directory — with real names, real prices, and real links. Not estimates. Not placeholders. The actual programs your family can sign up for.

💡 Make It Social: Join or Start a Hiking Group
A state park visit once is a field trip. A state park visit every other week with the same group of families is community.
Two Facebook groups in the Upstate already organize regular homeschool nature outings well and are worth joining:
• Greer Area Homeschool Adventures (Facebook) — organizes regular meetups and field trips including nature outings across the Upstate
• Upstate Forest School and Outdoor Learning Community (Facebook) — specifically nature and outdoor-focused; regular trail meetups for homeschool families
If neither group hikes in your area yet, consider posting in your county homeschool group to start a monthly park day. Pick one park, one recurring day of the month, and show up. That’s how outdoor homeschool community gets built.

The Tim Tebow Law — Accessing Public School Extracurriculars
Beyond the 67 programs listed above, homeschooled students in South Carolina have a legal pathway to participate in public school sports and extracurriculars through the Equal Access Interscholastic Activities Act — commonly called the Tim Tebow Law.
📜 SC Tim Tebow Law — Key Facts (§59-63-30)
• Homeschooled students may try out for public school extracurricular activities
• Includes: sports teams, marching band, chorus, academic teams, theater, and more
• Student must meet the same academic and behavior standards as enrolled students
• Student must be a legal resident in the school district’s attendance zone
• Homeschool instruction must meet SC legal requirements (Option 1, 2, or 3)
• The law gives homeschoolers the right to TRY OUT — not guaranteed participation
• Contact your local school district’s activities director for their specific process
⚠️ Each district implements this differently. Call before assuming access.
The Tim Tebow Law is especially valuable for high school athletes seeking varsity-level competition or students who want access to specialized programs (marching band, debate team, AP courses offered through school extracurriculars) that don’t exist in the homeschool ecosystem.
Building a Sustainable Extracurricular Life
Sixty-seven options can feel overwhelming. Here’s a practical framework for choosing:
- Start with one. Pick the single activity your child is most interested in right now. One anchor activity attended consistently builds more skill and more friendship than five activities attended sporadically.
- Add community, not just classes. Activities where your child sees the same kids repeatedly — a sports team, a weekly art class, a theater program — build real friendships. One-off workshops don’t.
- Let them quit and try again. A child who tries gymnastics for a semester and decides it’s not for them has learned something important. Move on without guilt.
- Watch for overlap with your homeschool. An art class that doubles as art history (Yellowbobbypins), a STEM program that counts as science enrichment, a theater class that develops public speaking for rhetoric — these are wins in more than one column.
- Budget for what matters. Some of the most valuable programs in this list are under $20/session. Some are membership-based. Know your number before you fall in love with something.
🌿 The Bottom Line
Homeschooled children in the Upstate have access to more activities than most families realize.
The question isn’t ‘is there enough?’ — it’s ‘which ones are right for this child right now?’
Start with one. Build from there.
