The Most Important Thing First
You don’t need to spend
a lot of money to homeschool well.
The most expensive curriculum is not the best curriculum. And in the early years especially, the most important things — reading aloud, playing outside, having real conversations, following curiosity — cost almost nothing. Before we talk about what to buy, let’s talk about what you actually don’t need.
✓ You don’t need a complete boxed curriculum
Most homeschool families piece together their own approach from multiple free and low-cost sources.
✓ Young kids don’t need hours of bookwork
Play, real-life experiences, and read-alouds ARE education for ages 4-8. Research is clear on this.
✓ Worksheets are a tool, not a requirement
Memorization and worksheets are one approach. There are many others — often more effective.
✓ Life is full of free learning everywhere
Cooking, gardening, nature, conversations, and library books teach real, lasting skills every day.
✓ Your presence is the curriculum
An engaged, curious parent is worth more than any program you could buy. You already have what matters most.
✓ You can always adjust as time goes on
Start minimal. Add structure only when you identify a specific gap. Don’t overbuy in year one. Repeat what works.
time guide
How much focused learning time does your child actually need?
For 1-on-1 learning, children cover far more ground in 30-90 focused minutes than in a full school day of 30 kids. These are generous, research-informed estimates — not minimums to feel bad about missing.
⭐ Play, outdoor time, read-alouds, and real-life activities count as learning. Always. At every age.
Ages 4–6
Early Childhood
20
min/day
Play IS the curriculum. Reading aloud, songs, nature. No worksheets needed.
Ages 7–8
Early Elementary
45
min/day
Reading + math daily. Short sessions. Lots of read-aloud. Plenty of free play.
Ages 9–10
Late Elementary
60
min/day
Core subjects focused. Interest-led afternoons. Writing practice begins.
Ages 11–12
Middle Elementary
90
min/day
Growing independence. More writing. Deeper subject dives. Coop classes begin.
Ages 13–15
Middle School
2-3
hrs/day
Mostly self-directed. Transcript building. Dual enrollment options. Deep interest work.
Ages 16–18
High School
3-4
hrs/day
Credit-based planning. College prep. Dual enrollment. Internships. Portfolio building.
The 1-on-1 advantage: Research on tutoring (Bloom’s 2-Sigma Effect) shows 1-on-1 instruction produces results two standard deviations above the classroom average. 20 focused minutes with a present, engaged parent beats two hours of worksheets every time. Your child doesn’t need more hours. They need better hours — and you’re already providing them.
build your own
Four ways to homeschool for almost nothing.
You don’t have to buy a boxed curriculum to have a rich, effective homeschool. These four approaches range from totally free to very low cost — and many families find them more engaging than anything they paid for.
🌿
Charlotte Mason — Free Version
Living books, nature, and narration
Charlotte Mason’s entire philosophy is built around books you can borrow for free, nature you can walk outside and find, and narration — where the child tells back what they learned instead of filling in a worksheet. Ambleside Online publishes a complete free CM curriculum at amblesideonline.org.
Cost: $0 — everything from the library
Resources: Ambleside Online (free), Librivox audiobooks (free), your library card, a nature journal, and your own backyard.
🔨
Project-Based Learning
Pick a topic. Dive deep.
A child obsessed with ancient Egypt is learning history, geography, science, writing, art, and math — naturally, joyfully, deeply. Project-based learning follows the child’s curiosity and lets real subjects emerge from real investigation. No curriculum required. Just access to libraries, YouTube, and time.
Cost: $0–$30 for materials
Resources: Library books, YouTube documentaries, Khan Academy, nature field trips, maker kits, any topic your child actually loves.
🌱
Unschooling / Life Learning
Trust the process. Life is the curriculum.
Unschooling follows the child’s natural learning instincts without formal curriculum or schedule. Reading happens when the child wants to read. Math emerges from cooking, building, and games. History unfolds through stories and conversations. It requires trust — and it works. John Holt’s research and Peter Gray’s work in “Free to Learn” make a compelling case.
Cost: $0 — library cards and presence
Resources: Your time, your attention, rich experiences, a library card, and the willingness to follow where curiosity leads.
🎨
Eclectic Mix — Build Your Own
Khan Academy math + library books + real life
The most common approach among experienced homeschoolers. Free Khan Academy for math. Library books and Librivox for reading and literature. YouTube and museum trips for science and history. Real-life experiences for everything else. You choose what to add based on your child’s specific needs and interests. Nothing is mandatory.
Cost: $0–$100/year
Anchor resources: Khan Academy (free), your public library, Librivox (free), Easy Peasy All-in-One (free), and any paid curriculum you add selectively.
Real Life Is Learning
What education looks like outside the workbook.
These everyday activities teach real, lasting skills — for free. Inspired by the Wild + Free philosophy and the lived reality of families who have discovered that the best education doesn’t come in a box.
