Free Homeschooling: The Easy Complete Guide to $0 Education (Curriculum, Resources & Strategies)
Homeschooling does not have to be expensive. In fact, some of the most educationally rich homeschool families I know spend very close to nothing โ and their children are among the most intellectually alive, curious, and capable young people I’ve encountered.
The homeschool curriculum industry would prefer you believe otherwise. Four hundred dollars for a boxed curriculum. Eighty dollars for a single math program level. Fifteen hundred dollars for a co-op membership. The marketing is expert and the anxiety of new homeschool parents is real โ and the industry knows it.
Here is what the industry doesn’t advertise: Khan Academy is free, comprehensive, and genuinely excellent. Ambleside Online is a complete Charlotte Mason K-12 curriculum that costs nothing. Your library card is a gateway to every subject in the human knowledge base. The outdoor world is the richest learning environment available โ and it requires exactly zero dollars to access.
This guide is the most comprehensive treatment of free homeschooling available. It covers every major free homeschool curriculum option, how to use your library as your primary curriculum resource, free Upstate SC resources, how to build a complete K-12 education for $0 or near zero, and what a real free homeschool day looks like.
The Free Homeschooling Philosophy
Free homeschooling is not a compromise. It is a philosophy โ grounded in the belief that the most valuable educational resources are not purchased but encountered: in books, in nature, in conversation, in community, in real work, and in the irreplaceable experience of a child pursuing what genuinely interests them.
The families who run the most successful free homeschools share a few characteristics. They use their library voraciously and without embarrassment. They spend significant time outdoors. They read aloud constantly. They are connected to a homeschool community that provides the social dimension that money cannot buy. And they have learned to see learning in everything their children do โ not just in what happens at the table during designated school hours.
Free homeschooling is also, it should be noted, a legitimate economic necessity for many families. The cost of homeschooling can be a significant barrier โ and it should not be. The goal of this guide is to make it completely clear: every family, regardless of economic circumstances, can provide their child with an excellent education at no cost.
Your Most Powerful Free Resource: The Library
Before we discuss any free homeschool curriculum, we need to talk about the library. Because the library IS the curriculum โ or can be, for every subject, at every level, from kindergarten through high school.
A library card provides access to: physical books in every subject, audiobooks (and ebooks via the Libby app) in every subject, DVDs and educational videos, periodicals and magazines, research databases, maker spaces (many libraries now have 3D printers, sewing machines, and recording equipment), STEM kits for home checkout (Greenville County Library offers these), programming and events for children and teens, and the expertise of trained librarians who will happily help you find resources in any subject.
Get to know your librarians. Tell them you homeschool and what your child is studying. Ask for reading recommendations. Ask which databases you have free access to. Ask about free homeschool programs. Librarians are among the greatest unrecognized assets of the homeschool community.

When Free Isn’t Enough
Free homeschooling works for many families for many years. But there are situations where targeted investment in a paid resource makes a genuine difference:
- Reading difficulties: If your child struggles significantly with reading, All About Reading ($40-80/level) is worth the investment. Free phonics resources are good; AAR’s multi-sensory, Orton-Gillingham approach is better for struggling readers.
- Math gaps: If Khan Academy isn’t clicking โ if your child needs manipulatives and parent-led instruction rather than self-paced video โ Math-U-See ($60-150/level) is worth considering.
- Writing instruction for older students: Free copywork and narration are excellent through middle elementary. For grades 5+ who need to develop essay-writing and composition skills, IEW or Brave Writer guides ($40-100) provide a structure that free resources don’t fully replicate.
- Co-op access: Enrichment co-ops and homeschool groups involve fees. The social and educational value of consistent community often justifies this as the one investment worth making even on a very tight budget.
๐ธ The Free Homeschooling Budget Reality
If you need to spend any money, spend it in this order:
1. Library card (free) โ your primary curriculum
2. SC State Parks annual pass ($99) โ your science and nature program
3. One enrichment co-op membership (varies) โ your social curriculum
4. All About Reading if phonics is needed ($40-80) โ reading is the foundation of everything
5. Math-U-See if Khan Academy isn’t working ($60-150) โ sequential math matters
Everything else can wait until you know what your child actually needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a free homeschool education as good as a paid one?
For most families, yes โ and in some ways better. The families who spend the most on curriculum are often the most anxious about homeschooling, because they’ve confused spending money with providing a good education. Khan Academy + library is genuinely excellent. Ambleside Online is genuinely excellent. The research on what produces good learning outcomes points to read-alouds, meaningful conversation, outdoor time, and consistent reading practice โ all free.
How do I document free homeschooling for SC compliance?
The same way you document any homeschooling: a log of what was covered (subjects, activities, books read), a portfolio of work samples (narrations written down, nature journal pages, math printouts from Khan Academy), and a semiannual progress report. The format of your learning materials doesn’t change the compliance requirements.
What if my child needs more than I can provide for free?
First, exhaust free homeschool options โ Outschool has free classes, libraries have programming, co-ops have scholarship options. If paid resources are necessary, prioritize reading instruction above all else (reading unlocks everything), then math, then community. Everything else can wait.
Can I use free homeschool curriculum for a child with special learning needs?
Sometimes. For children with dyslexia or significant reading challenges, structured literacy programs (which are not free) are typically more effective than free alternatives. For children with ADHD or attention challenges, the manipulative-heavy Math-U-See ($60-150) may be more effective than screen-based Khan Academy. Free homeschool resources are the starting point โ if they’re not sufficient, targeted investment in specific areas is warranted.
